How many bottles of Prosecco do I need for a party?

A 750 ml bottle pours about 5 glasses. Allow 2 glasses per guest for a toast-and-mingle party and 3 to 4 for a long one. For 30 guests, that's 12 bottles for a toast, or 18 to 24 for a long evening. A case of 12 covers a 30-guest toast exactly.

The quick table

Each figure is for 750 ml bottles (about 25.4 fl oz), poured at about 5 glasses per bottle, so roughly 150 ml, or 5 fl oz, a glass.

Round up, never down. An unopened bottle keeps for another day, but running dry at nine o'clock is a story guests will tell.

How many glasses in a bottle?

About 5, if you pour a standard glass of roughly 5 fl oz. Pour into tall flutes for a toast and you may stretch a bottle to 6 or 7 small glasses; pour generous glasses at a long dinner and you may get 4. The table uses 5 because it is the honest middle.

If you're topping up a toast rather than serving full glasses, the toast column will leave you with a bottle or two in hand. That's a good problem: they keep unopened in a cool, dark place, ready for the next celebration.

Which column is yours?

Toast and mingle means a couple of hours: drinks on arrival, a toast, then people drift. Two glasses each is plenty. A long party means dinner, dancing or an afternoon that turns into evening. Plan on 3 glasses each, and 4 if your crowd loves bubbles or Prosecco is the only drink on offer.

Mixing spritzes or mimosas? Each one uses less wine than a full glass, so the toast column usually covers a brunch. For the longer guide to serving sizes and guest counts, see how many bottles of Prosecco per guest, or plug your own numbers into the Drinks Calculator.

Ordering a case, and splitting Gold and Rosé

A case is 12 bottles, which is handy because the numbers above fall neatly into cases. Twelve bottles toast 30 guests; two cases cover 40 guests at 3 glasses each.

You don't have to choose one wine. Split the case between the Gold and the Rosé: 6 and 6 if you're not sure, or 8 Gold and 4 Rosé for a dinner with seafood. Both are Brut, so they sit happily side by side, and guests love having a choice. Start with Bella Principessa Prosecco D.O.C. Brut, then add the pink.

Getting it in time

Ordering online from Primo Liquors? Order well ahead of the party, because someone 21 or over has to be home to sign. Buying from a shop in Florida? Call ahead to ask about a full case, since stock varies by store. Chill the bottles for at least three hours before guests arrive, and keep a couple in reserve in the fridge.
